How to Forge a Christmas Tree Stand | Beginner Blacksmithing Project

https://youtube.com/watch?v=dX9D_QoJ-j0

Welcome to make them
with me, David Picciuto. And today we're going to do a little bit
of blacksmithing and welding to make a Christmas tree stand check it. Today's video is brought to you by
Squarespace. Later on in the video, I'm going to show you how you can enhance
your online presence with Squarespace. Today, we are going to cut down a tree and use
it for our Christmas tree and the stand we're going to do a little
bit of blacksmithing, a little bit of forging to
make.

I think I can do this. I don't have a lot of
experience with this, but plan a is this tree is
going to go into this little cylinder that we'll make,
we'll throw it in the fire. We'll heat it up and then
we'll try to bend it. And then we'll weld a
plate on the bottom there. My welding skills have to be good enough
where this holds water for the tree. The tree is going to go in here, like, so, and then we are going to have three legs. I'm just going to draw two
that will stick up like so, and there'll be another one in the back.

And then we'll weld on a
nut here and a nut here. And then an eye bolt will
go through there and through there to hold the tree and
the place. Yeah. So let's, let's begin. I've got some 14 gauge steel. You probably don't need a forge
to do this. This is thin enough. You could probably just use a torch to
heat it up and kind of hammer it into place, but blacksmitjs love overkill. So I have this paper template and
I think this is the size that I want. So I'm just going to draw this out
here and then cut it out with the angle grinder. That guy bent into a
somewhat circular shape. We'll weld that together later wall. So cut the bottom later after welding.
So now I want to make the three legs. So we're moving on to a thicker gauge
steel. This is one eighth again. I think the kiln is overkill, but I've
got the tool I want to use it.

This is, this is my, this is my show. So again, I'm going to cut this out
with the angle grinder. We're going to throw it in there and
we're going to bend them the shape. It's not a kiln. It's a,
it's a, what? It's a forge. Dude doesn't even know
what he's talking about. Unsubscribe right. Here, buddy. I'm using some vice grips and whatever
that is called to close it up. Nice and tight. And uh, we're
gonna weld this guy together. It's got to hold water. So I got to
make sure I got a welded real good. I started grinding that down and I
could see a little bit of light coming through there. So I'm going to fix that. So I have that welded together.
It's not a very good circle. So we're going to go
back out to the forge.

Now we're going to grind away this, and then we're going to check
to see if it holds water. It is still insanely hot. I'm not
sure why. I'm why I'm holding this. Here's the test. We got right there.
Nope. I've got another one over here. So Dan was wondering, why
can't you just seal the inside and it, this is a pride thing.
I want to be able to weld this. So it holds water. Of course I could
put some sort of sealant in there. I really, really, really
want it to hold water. And I'm saying this as I burn my hand, we got it to hold water.

Um, there's a lot of weld on there now. So I'm just gonna not
grind it all the way away. Does the defense's case hold
water. Yeah, this is all done. It holds water. I sanded the legs
a little bit or grind them down. So they had nice round corners. And before I weld them on there, I'm going to drill a hole for the bolt. And this'll be easier to drill now
than after it's welded on there. So I'm going to take
this into the shop and… We got the three legs on there. And so now I'm going
to weld this bow bolt, bolt, bolt B O L T on the inside.

So this will screw in.
So to hold that in place, instead of using clamps, I'm just going to do one of
these numbers and hopefully not tack the whole nuts… NUT not bolt nut. We don't
care about terms around here. It's pretty. But what do you see the tree
that's going to go in there? So now we're just going to paint
that I'm not even going to sand it. This is the Charlie Brown
Christmas tree stand. So while we're waiting for this to dry, we have a tree growing next to our house that it's basically, it's a weed
tree. It's not supposed to be there. And we've been meaning to replant it
because we don't want the roots to interfere with the house.
But instead of replanting it, we're going to turn it into
a Christmas tree. This thing, this just shot up out of nowhere. And since we made a really crappy stand, it deserves a really crappy
tree. This is going to be, this is the Charlie Brown Christmas tree. The tree is crooked. While we are decorating
this Christmas tree, I would like to tell you about today's
sponsor.

And that is Squarespace. We've got a light that's not working. So the one thing that I've
learned is these branches are just not strong enough to
even hold up the lights. So the lights are just on the center
column. There it is what it is. We cut it down out of the
yard. What do you expect? So what is Squarespace
and how do I use it? Squarespace is an easy
online tool to create a website. My website makes something.com and my
podcast website makingitpodcast.com. And my go kart racing, league idiots,
racing.com all Squarespace sites. I used to be a web developer.
So why would I use Squarespace? Because it makes life so much easier. It's really easy to set up and
they got beautiful templates. Let me tell you some of the
cool features about Squarespace. So a lot of us are crafters and makers
and woodworkers and metalworkers, and we want a place to sell our
stuff and you can do that easily.

And so you can set up a Squarespace
store and sell your items. And I don't only that allows you to
sell your stuff in person with point of sale. And it keeps track
of your inventory. Really. It just makes selling stuff super easy. I use it to sell digital plans as well
as physical items like t-shirts and merchandise books and all kinds of stuff. I'm so disappointed with
this Christmas tree, the branches aren't even strong
enough to hold the lights. I knew it was going to be an ugly tree,
but now it's even uglier, I guess, I guess that it is what it is,
right? So back to Squarespace, you can even buy your domain
name through Squarespace.

So it's all taken care of all your
stuff is just in one central place, your product inventory,
your website, your domain, it's all there. Visit squarespace.com.
And when you're ready to launch, visit squarespace.com/make something
for 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain. Thank you,
Squarespace for sponsoring today's video. Now allow me to do a weird flex
before I get back to this tree. Look at all of the things in my living
room that I've made here on this channel. We Got this record crate that
holds records and Nintendo games, and these coasters, This shaker style hotdog
table. You guys remember that? There's an inlay of a hotdog
on there. I promise you. I'm not obsessed with hotdogs. I've just
done a couple of hotdog based projects. This fireplace right here, we made the concrete inserts
and the wooden surround. Original Nintendo that we took apart
and made a wooden case for this little stand over here, which holds
our subwoofer and our router.

The little box inside here. This was
made completely with a laser cutter. Yeah, you can do fine
woodworking with a laser cutter. This plant stand right here.
That plant stand right there. This stained glass piece back here, this tissue box where a tissue box just
drops right in these Christmas ornaments that we made with Evan and Katlin a
couple of years ago. This would ouch. This wooden TV remotes. Yeah. We made a wooden TV remote. Oh, let's not forget this sculpture
back here. Cherry, maple, and metal that we had Chrome plated. And finally this coffee
table with a lift top. So you can eat while watching
your Christmas movies. Uh, I can't, I can't believe that the it's so
flimsy that it won't even hold the lights, but it is my Charlie
Brown Christmas tree. Uh, the base. Yeah, I could have made
the base much larger.

It does work, but if you have a cat or a wiener dog, he could probably knock over that
tree without a problem. So, uh, if I had to do it again, I would
just make the base a lot larger. I'm having trouble decorating the tree
because every single strand of lights that we have has broken lights and
sometimes they back on when you shake them and you know what,
the, the base is super ugly. I was using that glitter spray paint, and then the can clogged
up halfway through.

So I didn't even get to finished painting. I realized like not every single one of
my projects has to be the most beautiful thing in the world. It is about
making stuff and having fun, making mistakes and learning
from that. So, uh, yeah, I definitely learned
from that. I would have, I would make that a little bit
different. I would make it much bigger. I think if I was going to do it
again, it wouldn't be spray painted. I would actually do a hammered
finish on the whole thing. So it looks blacksmith and not
something that you would get from the dollar store. It is what it is.
I'm a little disappointed with it, but sometimes I got to get out of my
own head and realize it's a learning experience.

It's about having fun.
And it's about making something. And to be honest, that's going to
get covered up with a tree skirt. So you're not even going to see it. So just to have fun and make
stuff and learn from it. As I look around this living room, there's so many things in here that I've
made each one of those things that I showed you, I have a video on, so you can go find that
somewhere here on my channel. And that's what this channel is
about. It's about having fun, even if you don't know all the
terms and the vocabulary of, of what you're doing, like,
like today, like who cares? We're just having fun.

Enjoy
the process, Merry holidays, whatever you celebrate. I hope it
is a beautiful and wonderful season. What a crazy year. It has been. 2020, Am I right? All right. That's gonna wrap it up as
always be safe, have fun, stay passionate and make
something hopefully off camera. I can spend a little bit more time trying
to get the lights and some ornaments on there. And then maybe at the
end of the video, we'll have a, we'll have a nice, beautiful
beauty shots. Glamor shot..
