Several months ago, I was inspired to do a
piece based on a song I heard. The song is performed by Corey Harris and it is Sweet Black Angel. I thought it would be an appropriate piece
for the time and the place. The song was actually written in 1930, but it has been performed by several other performing artists since. I was making this piece with the intent on
submitting it to the State Fair juried exhibition again this year. I have participated in the last couple of
years. Then, 2020 came along. Holy cow. The end of 2019, I was feeling so great about
the direction Cammie's Garage was going in. Things were looking up, then just this year…
just… put the kibosh on everything. About a month ago, I received an e-mail from
the State Fair encouraging me to apply again, reminding me of the deadlines. Then, just a week before the opening of submissions,
I was told that it was cancelled. When stuff like this happens, it is really
difficult to maintain enthusiasm and have motivation to make new work…
When I am wondering
if it is going anywhere. I have sold a few pieces and got a few commissions
this year… but I just lost that momentum that I had at the end of last year. I had the idea to do this piece months ago. I am only just now getting started on it. If you watched my last video, you know that
the Cedar Lady was practice for this piece, just to see if I could do it. Cedar is a cheap and soft wood to work with. Walnut would be a little harder…
but it will look much nicer when it is done..
