When I was cutting a bunch of pieces for a
recent sculpture, I cut about 100 pieces at the wrong size. I thought, "What am I going to do with these?" I decided to make a couple of vases from them. This is the first of the two. I glued the pieces into rings. Then, I sanded the faces flat so I could glue
them together. I had a piece of reclaimed oak that I was
going to use as the base. To make it easier to turn the inside, I decided
I was going to glue one ring on at a time and turn the inside. I put a tenon on the bottom to mount it in
the chuck. Oops! I had a piece of black limba that had been
lying around the shop for a while.
I was wondering what I could do with it. I decided to make a feature ring. Because the pieces were so small, I did not
bother gluing them into a ring first. I just sandwiched them between two layers. I turned those two layers and sanded the inside. I was not too concerned about the outside
at this point. I glued on the next two layers. These were going to be my final layers. I finish-turned it, then sanded it. I parted it with the parting tool. I meant to catch that before it fell off,
but it broke off prematurely. I removed the little nub with a chisel. Then, I sanded it smooth. I put my brand on the bottom and finished
it with wipe-on varnish. That is a quick, simple one for you today. Thanks for watching Cammie's Garage..
