How to Build a Leopold Bench: A Step-by-Step Guide
If you’re a fan of DIY projects, building a Leopold bench should be on your list. Not only is it a quick and easy project that can be completed in an hour or two, but it also makes for a fun family activity to engage your kids or grandkids. Additionally, this bench is an excellent piece of outdoor furniture that is not only comfortable but also looks attractive. In this article, we’ll share with you the step-by-step process for building a Leopold bench, as demonstrated in Spike Carlsen’s video.
Before we begin, here are some of the materials and tools you’ll need:
– Treated wood (2×8 and 2×6)
– A speed square
– Measuring tape
– Pencil
– Power saw or hand saw
– Construction adhesive
– Exterior screws (2.5 inches)
– Power drill
– Wood glue
Step 1: Cut the Legs
The first step is to cut out the front and back legs from a single 2×8 board. In this case, we’re using a ten-foot-long board. Use treated wood because it lasts longer outdoors. Cut out four legs in total: two long ones measuring 33 inches and two short ones measuring 18 inches. To ensure a uniform and consistent 30-degree angle on each end of the legs, use a speed square. Place the corner of the square at the tip of your board, set the angle at 30 degrees, and draw a line. Continue to do this for every marked point on the board.
Step 2: Assemble the Legs
Now it’s time to build the leg assembly. The two short legs should be attached to the long legs to create an L shape. Use construction adhesive and exterior screws (at least four on each side) to secure them. If your wood is splitting, pre-drill the holes using a 1/8 inch drill bit to avoid further damage. It’s important to note that the legs need to be mirror images of each other, so use the mark you made on the short leg to ensure the top lines up with the final joinery. Repeat the step for the other leg assembly.
Step 3: Install the Seat
Once the leg assemblies are completed, it’s time to install the seat. We’re using a 12-inch-wide Stark Red, which provides ample room for a comfortable seat. Place the seat on a flat surface, then align the back corner with the back edge of the leg. Drill four screws near the edge of the seat and three screws into the side, making sure the screws won’t poke out the other side. Move to the other side and repeat the process.
Step 4: Add the Backrest
After adding the seat, it’s time to install the backrest. We’re using a two-by-six that’s 39 inches long. Drill a couple of holes at each end of the board to prevent splitting before positioning it against the back legs. Once in place, screw the board to the legs.
Conclusion
Building a Leopold bench is a fun and easy DIY project that you can complete in a few hours. It’s an excellent addition to any outdoor space and a great conversation piece. Just remember to use treated wood, pre-drill holes to avoid splitting, and use construction adhesive to prevent wobbling. Don’t miss out on the chance to make something great with your tools and your family.
