The Project
The project of building a bench was inspired by a bench that was spotted at a local park. The builder decided to make adjustments to the design by making it slightly smaller and changing the dimensions of the wood used to construct it. The bench is constructed using white oak, which is a great choice for outdoor projects due to its durability and resistance to the elements.
The Tools Used
Throughout the video, the builder utilizes various tools to construct the bench. The Delta mortising machine is one of the most notable tools used in the construction process. However, the builder also makes use of a crosscut sled in the Powermatic saw, a router, a drum sander, and a miter saw.
The Construction Process
The construction process begins with measuring and cutting the legs to their final length. The builder then utilizes a drum sander to remove blade marks from the legs. A stop block is used to cut the legs to their final length. A pattern is then made to create the curve in the seat. Half inch MDF is used to create the pattern, which is then used to trace and cut the curve on the bandsaw.
The side rails of the bench are then cut to a rough length before being ripped and cross cut to size. Then, the rails are cut to the length for the tenons. An old Delta mortising machine is used to cut the mortises for the rails to attach to the legs.
The wooden slats are then cut to length and ran through a drum sander to remove blade marks and create smooth surfaces. The builder adds a chamfer to the top of each slat and the front and back rails of the bench. Nylon domes are added to the bottom of the legs, and the bench is finally assembled using glue and clamps.
The Finished Product
The finished product is a beautiful outdoor bench constructed from white oak. The curved seat adds a nice touch of comfort and style to the bench. The builder also adds a coat of Total Boat’s Amber Halcyon to the bench for added protection from the elements.
Conclusion
This project serves as a great example of a woodworking project that can be accomplished with the right tools and proper instruction. By incorporating a curved seat and attention to detail, the end result is a beautiful and functional outdoor bench that will last for years to come.
