Pedal-Schmiedehammer selber bauen | DIY treadle hammer

Some time ago I already showed you how I forged my own knive. Ever since I was fascinated by forging, now I want to raise my skills to a more professional level. For that purpose I built myself a treadle operated hammer for forging. I am going to show you how I built it. I used old truss wood for the construction. I squared, cut and tounged it. However, this can also be done simply with a hand saw and a chisel. Then I already cut the iron round bar to build the anvil and the hammer from.

Welding the ball bearings isn´t the best idea, however it worked for the hammer. To make sure that all, the holes are vertical, I used the box column drill. Then I already welded the anvil and used a small piece of leather to dampen when mounting. Also I welded the hammer to a sqare pipe. Here you see a little bit how I push the material with the electrode from both sides in the direction of the slot. Ideal you can raise the slag very easy. Here, I welded the axle to the mount. Also for the axle of the pedal, I used a bearing. And welded the pedal together.

For the bearing of the connection rod I used a M16 Nut on a threaded rod. This is going to be the upper mount of the connection rod. This is going to be the the connection rod. Then I connected the rod to the nut. The hammer is simply raised by a spring. The wodden strips are just for added stability and to make it easierto carry it around. Then I already painted it and used a mixture of bees wax, oil and tree resin to seal the wood.

Also I scorched the wood to make the surface look better and also to soak in the mixture. I already tested the hammer a little bit Al materials I used, I had already laying around at home. In the next video you are gonna see how I built my propane forge. On the second channel, I will also upload a video soon, about making a hidden concrete foundation for the hammer.
