TALLADEGA, Ala. – MasterBrand Cabinets, the largest cabinet manufacturer in North America and the sixth-largest company on the FDMC 300, will shut down its cabinet plant in Talladega, Alabama – laying off around 300 employees.
The closure is due to changing market conditions and consumer tastes, according to a release. The company hopes the closure will improve its operational efficiences while addressing these changing conditions, it said.
Production will continue until June. Employees will be provided with additional compensation, according to the release. MasterBrand says it will also work with state and local agencies to help employees find new employment. Employees are also encouraged to apply at the company’s other manufacturing plants.
Fortune Brands Home & Security – MasterBrand’s parent – recently reported an 11 percent increase in kitchen cabinet sales. Cabinet sales for the quarter reached $655.5 million. Sales for the year reached $2.47 billion, a 6 percent increase over 2019.
Last November, MasterBrand announced plans to open an 840,000-square-foot facility in Jackson, Georgia, creating nearly 400 jobs.
MasterBrand competitor Cabinetworks, which owns Kraftmaid and Merillat, was recently sold to a private investment group. Cabinetworks is the second-largest cabinetmaker in North America.
