Chisel techniques – rounded corners

Welcome back to Tightwad Workshop In this video I'll show how to round the corner of a board using only a chisel and mallet Start by marking the corner using a suitable circular object Next, select a chisel and start removing the waste from outside your line The workpiece was moving a bit, so I tightened the holdfasts Use your chisel bevel up, and control the angle of the cut by raising or lowering the chisel's handle Normally we'd use a saw to either make the whole cut or at least remove most of the waste before chiselling But this is still a good practice exercise to learn how to handle the chisel I needed to raise the workpiece a bit otherwise I'd start chiselling into the bench You'll find that the chisel cuts less easily as you move around the corner of the workpiece This is because the grain of the timber makes your cut change from a paring cut to a chopping cut I'm changing to another chisel from our Group C toolkit, just to show that they all work equally well for this exercise Now I've put the mallet down, and I'm smoothing off the surface with some hand-held paring cuts If we were using this piece in a project, we could finish this surface with sandpaper now That's all for now, thanks for watching
