Artifact Exhibition: Wooden Mallet

Well welcome back YouTube subscribers and
viewers! Today we are in the enslaved community. We
are in the reconstructed 18 by 18 slave home where Judy and Lewis lived back in 1843. But today the artifact we're going to be talking
about is this wooden mallet right here. Now this is a type of carpentry tool here,
could have been used also in logging on the plantation as well. Lumber was a major cash crop here. But one of the uses for this would be for
obviously hitting things very, very hard. This is heavy. But for constructing of buildings, is a possibility,
also for splitting logs like I mentioned for logging as well. So the construction of a building like this:
wooden pegs, tapered pegs were used to hold joints and joists together. And so pounding those wooden pegs into the
structure of the building would have been used with a mallet very similar to this one
right here. There would have been smaller wooden mallets
as well used in the carpentry shop by carpenters like enslaved men: Lewis, Melvin, and Will.

So that's a little bit about mallets here
at our site. Tune in to our channel to watch more of our
videos, and don't forget to subscribe as well. We would love to have more subscribers. Thank you guys so much, and we'll see you
out here next time!.
