Garage Update NO.1 | Paul Sellers

[Music] hello everybody I want to welcome you to my new workshop this is my garage space this is where I work in the everyday of life now and a lot of you have seen me transition from one place to another and it has felt very much like I've been living in Airbnb on and off for two or three years but now having developed this and you have come to this point where I'm really feeling settled into the garage I want to share with you how we got here because this is not like a kitchen where you have the three points of contact the cook of the sink and the refrigerator we're anchored to this thing called a bench if you're a hand tool woodworker you realize that you cannot work live and enjoy life without a workbench so this is the hub where everything emanates from everything is brought to this built on this and taken away from this so this becomes the central hub of this multi-dimensional multifaceted way of working with wood so I want to welcome you here and I want you to know that from here on this is where we will be broadcasting whatever we do filming whatever we do is going to come from this spot how did we choose the garage we found that the majority of people do woodworking in their garage at home and that's our audience that's who you are a lot of you so we want to continue your education help you to enjoy woodworking and I'm going to walk you through my garage space to show you where I put what and why I did what so here we are in my garage workspace and this has been developed over a number of years you may not realize that but what I've worked out is that you do work in a very confined area when you're working with hand tools you want something near to hand you don't want it on top of you and you don't want to walk across the room all the garage in this case to go and retrieve something like a clamp so I've fitted this out and kitted it so that it works for me so I've got all my bench top is clear so if I start a project tomorrow what I've got is I've got a clear bench top I bring my wood and put it on the bench and then I start pulling pulling my chisel tray in place it wherever I want it I can put my planes on here I've got those behind me stored just out of the way but this is where I might put them in the everyday of life I'll put them here then I've got my layout tools here I've got my pencil my knife everything gets pulled to the bench top and then during the day I have this nice well here so if I take my chisels out and they tend to roll on the bench top if I have a flat bench top they roll away if I put them in the world they don't roll very far before they hit the stuff so that's why it has a well on this one I added this one because over a number of years I used one like that and I found it so handy for getting tools below the radar line and so I can take these out I can lower everything down all my marking gauges are right in this side of the bench where I reach for them so when I need a marking gauge I pull it out and it's right there ready to go to tasks special chisels are right in here this side is where my draw is going to go I've not cut this yet but we're going to show you a lot of these refinements on YouTube so under the end of my bench here I have my sharpening stones where I've had them for the last 20 or 30 years I can't find anywhere better they work perfectly there I've got my dustpan and brush I've got some special planes that I have under there they're easy to access and then here I've got my saw hangers so my saw my big 1214 it's 12 inch and 10 inch they're right there so if I'm dovetailing mortising Tenon's and things like that I'm ready to go to task I've got that I've got a nice big vise under the bench I've got my shelf I've got a stop on the sides and on the back stop things from sloughing off onto the floor and then I've put little nails and pins in different places to hold my bottle of water or to hold my duster brush like this one here those are all there but then right in this corner here this is where I start to spread my wings these double doors on my garage doors over here I've got the wood that I'm ready for the next prototype I'm going to start that either later today or this week anyway tomorrow so I've got my new wood for the prototype and behind that I've got some old wood that I'm going to repurpose and build a cabinet from two sawhorses they work great when I've got boards to rip sheet panels to cut down things like that I can put that in here my garage is eight feet by 18 feet of working space that I have access to so it's quite a good size I can get a sheet in between here just about but I can put a sheet on my bench top rip down it on the bench as well so this is four feet four foot two from the bench edge to this carriage here this is a moving dolly I can put my stuff on here just as I have and this makes it very movable and maneuverable so I can push this right out of the way and increase my space to five and a half feet then I've got my shelving unit again this is a prototype I put this together because I wanted to trial it first but I worked out the heights of things made sure there was no wasted space and this is not fully loaded yet but I've got places for my main planes my some of my less used saws go in the back here this is where the planes I just put on the bench go finishes different solvents and paints and things like that maybe oil for my oil stone or whatever so this is my favorite soft position I haven't really found anywhere that makes this better so I can take the sword that I want hang the other one back up and I can get cutting to task so I really like that a couple of extras like a hack so I don't use a hacksaw very often but when I'm metalworking I would use that and then I've got this little chest of drawers here that I put my pens pencils or screwdrivers anything I want in there there's no predictable thing in there but I do get to know where it is and that's the important thing it makes me efficient when I'm working because I don't have time to spare underneath here I can put the added things I've got a hot iron down there for when I'm ironing out dings in a piece of wood I've got some paper and a tray there with all those different accessible things so I like that under here my brace my bracing bits their tapes and things like that they hang well my other tools hang well here I've got some longer clamps that get that go on either side it's perfect for that and then under here I've got a place where I'm storing all of my long sash clamps I've got them both ends so I've got about 18 or 20 sash clamps in there that are very handy and yet they're completely out of the way so if I'm working on a project I can pull these out I'm ready to go and I can slide them out of the way when I'm done and I really like that at the end of this one I've got these cam clamps I don't know if you ever made these but we made a dozen or so of these and they're handy and then other clamps below that so it's very compact it keeps everything consolidated and it means I'm not spinning my heels looking around for stuff which I haven't done for the last couple of years because I never felt that sense of permanence that I've got in this garage so that's where I am what about wood that's always a bear for everybody what do I do with all the excess wood I came up with this method I've used this for a long time these are miniature versions of the ones that I've got are used over the years and found it handy for small stuff because I can see the wood that I've got and I can root in there I don't mind moving stuff around to to pull us to find the piece that I want I've got other pieces in here some shelves here for shelving wood wide panels can go down below and then this area right on the end against the brick wall I'm gonna do a sloping rack which I've used for a very long time and I really like it and that's where my full-length eight-foot nine-foot boards will go so I can lean them in there I'll keep them separate but I can also put sheet stuff behind it so if I want to do that that's what I can do this table here is my metalworking bench so I've got my big metalworking vise on top I've got nuts bolts screws and drill drivers underneath because it's got a shelf on just like this other one and this one I've put a a socket a range of plugs on here because I don't have plugs on this side on that wall of my workshop so I can plug this into my wall here I've got access then I can drill if I do use an electric tool or machine I can plug it in there and that works great so that basically gives you the whole of the workshop except one thing we're going to be using my bandsaw I'm going to bring my bandsaw in here that's going to go here by the double doors I've got the special outlet there for the power that I need and I'll have my dust extraction hooked up to that so there get hugged up together there they'll be out of the way most of the time and but I've left the doors there I've put this near the door so I can slide my long lengths of wood from this length here all the way through to the outside and I can rip my boards down do whatever I want with it so that's going to work for me so that basically gives you the workshop that I feel is ideal for me you'll adapt yours a little bit differently you'll have different equipment but basically the hub is the bench and this is where I'm going to be showing you all the different projects that I'll be making in the future [Music]
