What's up! It's ya boy, Donavin and we are nine vlogs into this semester. I think there are going to be about, maybe at least six or seven more. We are more than half way done. I could not be more ready to finish out this semester of school. I'm ready to go. I'm ready to spread my wings. I'm having so much fun on this self-portrait bust in my sculpture class. I feel overwhelmed by the fact that this is my first time doing something like this and it's turning out beyond my expectations. Now I do have some complaints. The ears, the eyes, all of the features are done but one of the ears feels a little bit misplaced in comparison to the other.
Literally, right here I can see one side of the jaw line is lower and fuller than the other side and I was not able to see that before. So if I don't get anything else from these vlogs, that right there is worth it because I get to check my work as I'm working on it. So as of right now, the features are done like I said. The ears are on but I can always re-do that one side of the face that's not quite matching the good one.
This is the good side. And if I can be honest, in real life I think that's also the same as my real life good side. Now this side is the wonky side. It's not all the way wrong, but it's not all the way right either. In my 3D Design class we've been working on that topographic sculpture. It's the one where I'm cutting out a bunch of different pieces of wood and stacking them up to give it a map kinda feel. Mine is based off of an image of some rolling hills. Most of this process was sanding. I had to sand all these tiny 'teeny' little pieces and I still am not satisfied with how they turned out, if I can be completely honest. I feel like I could've kept sanding more and more and more to get them smoother and more uniform than what they are.
The way this project turns out is… okay. I want to do more stuff to it. Some parts of it, I wish I would've done differently. I wish I would've splurged on a more expensive wood because before painting I had to go in and cover up where some of these spots were completely chipped into the grain of the wood and part of the project that was really important to my instructor is showing the wood grain if you use wood. She really wanted to see the material itself. I think that that ended up being my downfall in craftsmanship because the wood is cheap. Therefore, it doesn't look its best so I really should've been able to cover it. But as you can see, when I'm painting I'm using a paper towel to smear the paint and to thin it out I'm also using extremely watered down acrylic paint so that it's staining the wood grain rather than painting over it. But like I said, I wish I could've just painted over the wood grain completely because there's just too many irregularities.
I feel like they don't add to it. She (my instructor) felt like some of the texture could add to the piece. You tell me down below if you feel that way. I feel like it does not. I feel like it takes away from it. And I'm going to cover it as soon as this thing gets graded because I want this to be something good. I don't want it to just meet the requirements of the assignment. I don't have much to show for Drawing class this week. Not to say that I didn't do much in Drawing class this week, but I did miss one day. This is the Interior drawing that I did from last vlog. I just wanted to show you the results of that because that's pretty much all I have to show you. I did do a repeated object drawing where I drew my mini Buddha head several times in an interesting composition That was our homework for the week. I did turn that in. Don't have any footage of it so you'll see it next week when I get it back with its grade.
We are starting on some charcoal drawings. We're finally advancing past the contour line drawings. And here are some examples of some of the pastel drawings that other classes have done. I thought these were absolutely gorgeous. I was so drawn to the colorful ones especially. But the black and white ones are really impressive as well. Now, this vlog also encompasses Spring Break which was last week. And there were a few things I wanted to do but they kinda flopped. I wanted to customize this hoodie because I saw something on Etsy that was stupid expensive so I just bought the stuff on Amazon for a reasonable price and I want to add some patches, these huge iron-on patches, but when I got them I realized…
"These not the iron-on's!" "Damn, they got me." I'm going to have to sew them. So now I'm in the process of figuring out how I'm going to sew these bad boys onto this jacket. I don't know. I'll get around to it. There are other things that are a priority. My first brew is done so now I'm going to add some fruit so it can continue to ferment and add carbonation and flavor. If you watched the end of my last vlog, I am brewing my own kombucha. And we made significant progress in these couple of weeks. I added lemon and ginger to most of my jars and then one of my jars is grapes. "Oh my God. It's so good! It almost tastes a little bit alcoholic." I have these huge jars that are actually from other bottles of kombucha that I just bought from the store. And I always feel guilty and weird throwing out glass, especially huge glass like this. I would never want to throw that out. I don't know.
It just seems so useful. So I kept it and I figured, well if I brew my own kombucha that can justify me keeping these enormous jars. The reason I didn't brew my kombucha inside of the huge brown jars is because I wouldn't be able to strain the fruit out in the way that I can with these wide-mouth jars. Also the clear glass allows me to see how my kombucha is progressing over time. "Ooh, ooh ooh! Look at that!" I'm tasting the grape. Now, I'm about to drink that right now! Hold on! Wait a minute. (tiktok @smilerbackers): "Delicioso!" "YES! Good!" [giggles] We gon' bottle this one up. This is the best one, really.
It's so sweet! Now, I had been wanting to change my hair for a while. Over Spring break I was like, okay let me just try it out. Let me see how I feel so I don't have to go to school with it like that the next day if I'm not feeling it. I was taking a video to see if I liked it, if it looked good. And wouldn't you know I was too self-conscious about it to wear it like that to school? So I just brought the afro back. I didn't want to get any comments about my hair being different. So I just didn't show them that I changed it. As always, thank you so much for watching! This has been boyDonavin and I will see you in the next one. Bye~!.
